Knob-and-tube (K&T) is an early electrical wiring method used from roughly 1880 to 1940. Wires run through ceramic knobs and tubes — without a ground wire and with insulation that degrades over time. Most Edinburg older homes and pre-war homes still have some K&T remaining.
K&T wiring has no ground, can't support modern electrical loads, and becomes brittle with age. Insulation that touches K&T (insulation contractors sometimes pack it tightly) creates a fire risk. Many insurance companies now require K&T removal as a condition of coverage.
